AACSB accreditation is the boundary this site draws around the field, so it is worth being precise about what it covers. AACSB, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, describes itself as the global standard-setting body for business education, and reports more than 1,000 accredited schools in over 100 countries and territories. Its accredited list, retrieved September 21, 2026, names 557 business schools in the United States, and 327 of those report an MBA that can be completed fully online.

What AACSB Accreditation Covers

It applies to the business school, not to one degree. A school that holds AACSB accreditation holds it across the business programs it runs, which is why an online MBA at an accredited school carries the same accreditation as the on-campus version. AACSB says the review combines rigorous self-assessment with peer review against its Global Standards for Business Education, and that the process is mission-driven: rather than prescribing one path, reviewers weigh a school against its own context, strategy and priorities.

That design matters when reading any ranking, this one included. Accreditation says a school met a peer-reviewed standard for how it runs and improves its programs. It does not grade a program against its peers, and it says nothing about price or what graduates go on to earn, which is why those two figures, not accreditation, decide the order of the ranking.

AACSB vs ACBSP vs IACBE

Three bodies accredit business programs at U.S. schools. Each description below is the organization's own, from the page linked in its name.

The three business accreditors compared on what they accredit, their reach and their approach
Body What it accredits Reach Approach
AACSB Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business The business school as a whole, not one degree 1,000+ accredited schools in more than 100 countries and territories Mission-driven review against the Global Standards for Business Education, combining self-assessment with peer review
ACBSP Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Business, accounting and business-related programs at associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level Worldwide, recognized by CHEA Quality assurance built around continuous improvement, with mentors and workshops through the process
IACBE International Accreditation Council for Business Education Business, accounting and business-related degree programs Worldwide Outcomes measured against the business unit’s own mission rather than prescriptive standards about resources

The differences are real but they are differences of scope and method, not a league table. A business school with ACBSP or IACBE accreditation has been reviewed by a body CHEA recognizes, and this site's silence about those schools is a boundary it drew, not a judgment it can support with data.

Programmatic Accreditation Is Not Institutional Accreditation

These are two separate layers, and conflating them is the most common mistake in this subject. A university holds institutional accreditation, which is what federal student aid depends on. A business school inside it may hold programmatic accreditation from AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE, and may hold none at all. CHEA counts roughly 19 recognized institutional accrediting organizations and about 63 recognized programmatic ones.

To check either one, the source is the register rather than the school's marketing: AACSB's accredited list for business-school accreditation, and the U.S. Department of Education's database of accredited institutions for the university itself. Every school in the program directory links to its own AACSB listing.

What It Does And Does Not Tell You

Accreditation is a floor, not a ranking. Among the 286 AACSB-accredited online MBAs ranked here, whole-program tuition runs from $9,000 to $149,028, and the median earnings their business master's graduates report a year after finishing range from $40,079 to $165,798. Every one of those schools cleared the same accreditation bar, so accreditation cannot be what separates them.

What this site will not tell you is whether employers insist on it. No federal survey reports hiring by accreditor, so any claim of a pay premium would be invented. The defensible reasons to care are narrower: doctoral programs often expect it, some employers and tuition-benefit schemes name it, and it gives a ranking a consistent field to compare. The methodology sets out how it is used here.
